Running a songwriting camp this week and Incubus came up, when one of my students Josh chose “Deep Inside” as his song to share with the rest of the kids, since they all shared songs that they loved and/or were inspired by.
All of the kids in the camp were familiar with Incubus, and this album. And all of them were/are collectively blown away by their landmark 1997 record S.C.I.E.N.C.E., and it was so incredibly refreshing to hear how this brilliant, perfect record inspired them as much as it has me, my whole life!
Great records stand the test of time…. and this is absolutely true with Incubus’ first proper full-length album, released on a major label.
S.C.I.E.N.C.E. is catchy, it’s totally bizarre (especially the guitars), it’s SUPER tight…….. it slams in all the right ways… the lyrics are insanely cool and interesting/intelligent, the turntable scratches add just the right amount of awesome with most of the tracks…. and man, they were just out of high school when they recorded it. Da fuq? Yeah.
Absolutely fucking brilliant.
I was lucky enough to see Incubus perform most of these songs live, in fall of 1998, with (hed)pe and Korn, on the “Family Values” tour. Absolutely perfect.
Before Korn took the stage, someone pointed out that Mike from Incubus was standing like 10 feet from us, near the back of the arena (some huge place in Lakeland, FL). I looked over and was like “whoa.” I approached him saying “Shit! You’re Mike from Incubus!” And he smiled and laughed… “Yeah, I’m Mike!” I sputtered, “I love you guys… great set, man!” He was really friggin’ cool and said thanks for coming and was impressed we drove like three and a half hours to see them. That was the extent of my interaction with him.
About a year later, I was living in California. My friend and I went to the Whisky-A-Go-Go in Hollywood, CA one night to see Hoobustank (before they changed the U to an A, and WAY before anyone knew who they were). Before the show started, someone mentioned that Jose (drummer) from Incubus was there. I turned around and holy shit, there was Jose. I talked briefly with him, and I told him how much of an inspiration he was to me. He was like a little younger than me… and man, I was so stoked to just shoot the shit a little bit, with him. He was cool and very chill and probably thought I was hyper and insane.
Blah blah blah. Incubus rules.
