I can’t recommend DrivenByMoss enough (Bitwig and Reaper extension / script).
I know nothing about Bitwig, but the work that Jurgen Moßgraber has put in, to make things a lot easier for those of us who want more controller support with our software (specifically Bitwig and Reaper), cannot be understated. This man has done great work for the music production community.
I first discovered this amazing thing when I got my Novation SL MKIII. At first, the script was a pain in the ass to install, which required some kind of Java install and it was just a mess… but now, everything is self-contained in a zip file and you just drop it into your Reaper folder. Note: I have had issues with Reaper responding VERY slowly with version 8.00, 8.10 and 8.20. I am currently at 7.40 or whatever… once he gets the bugs fully worked out with slow response with Reaper, I’ll update, but for now I’m sticking with 7.40.
For more info, you’ve got to check out his YouTube channel, where he demonstrates using many different controllers and how you can enhance the functionality of Bitwig and Reaper…
If you’re a Reaper or Bitwig user, and own SL MKIII, Push 2, Launchpad Pro, Komplete Kontrol S or A-series…. you would do yourself a HUGE favor, in downloading his FREE extension/script…. it is life-changing. He is truly a genius!
Ableton Live 10
Own a Maschine Jam? Want to use it with Ableton? Tired of the standard Native Instruments Maschine JAM template not exactly working like it’s supposed to (especially the keyboard/scale layout, which is supposed to be horizontal and isn’t)?
Head on over to Haxor and Roxor’s blog, and grab their HXR Live 10 MIDI Remote Script, which works WAY better than the regular Native Instruments one, and has enhanced functionality that the NI script does not have. These guys are too awesome. I sent them an email asking for a horizontal pad layout for Scale Mode, and they happily updated the MIDI Remote script to add that, as well as a vertical pad layout. I got it a few days early, but they’re announcing the update at their blog very soon, so head on over and grab the updated script! It’s so worth it.
I’m still getting my head around the many things that drive me nuts about Maschine… but, some tips I’ve found…
LOCK the screens you enter (such as EVENTS, which is basically the view where you can see the Pattern you’re recording, at least on the Maschine Studio and MK3). I always find it more useful to LOCK or LATCH the view/mode screens, than having them set to momentary.
Set the Count-In length to 1-bar in Preferences…. and then, when making a new pattern, hold the Pattern button, set the length of your Pattern, and then SHIFT+RECORD to enable the count-in. Way more useful.
Set the default Pattern length to 4 bars in Preferences. It makes your pattern less repetitive, and enables more variety. Some of the best YouTubers do it this way, too, like Accurate Beats, and Kit Complete.
Think SIMPLE, when it comes to variety. Since Maschine is pattern-based, you have to think in 2 bars, 4, bars, 8 bars. Keep beats simple. One thing my students always want to do is add something for like a couple beats or something layered under something yet… and it’s just not an easy thing to do. You have to keep it simple…. Maschine is not a DAW, but it’s close.
Ever have your “1-3-5” or “1-3-5-7” Chords go missing from Maschine when you’re in Keyboard (and then Chord) mode? So have I. Seems like it’s a bug. I don’t know why it happens, and there’s no way to get them back. The only fix is to copy (or save) your patterns, and bring them into a different (fresh) Maschine Project. Even closing and re-opening the software doesn’t fix the issue. It’s annoying as shit, and has happened to others.
Update your Maschine Factory Library to version 1.3.4, so you can hear the NI Previews, when browsing for sounds. Any version before 1.3.4 does not (fully) work with Maschine Previews. I had the Komplete preview sounds work, when browsing… but nothing in Maschine except the single drum sounds. Definitely update your library!
More to come as I remember……………….
