SONGWRITING/RECORDING TIPS

RECORDING TIP: Using Maschine MK3 as Control Surface for Reaper 5 (quick rundown)

Threw this video together really quickly before work, yesterday. This is a very quick rundown of the work I’ve done for months, for a handful of midi controllers, to use as Control Surfaces for Reaper 5. More videos to come soon, especially ones that show Reaper and how each hardware function affects Reaper in a quick way.

There are basically 10 pages of parameters (8 encoders / 8 buttons per page) and “main” functions which are the faceplate buttons, pads, and 4-way click-encoder.

More to come as time permits…

  1. This is just what I have been looking for, I have fumbled around with MidiOx and LoopMidi and made some custom templates in the controller editor but none have midi feedback from Reaper. I’m using the MaschineMKII, purely as a midi controller(Maschine is not running), and trying to simplify my workflow while I have artists in my home studio and we are working on the aftertouches and mastering of the stems for their tracks. Where can I get this? I need it in my life! and thank you for all your hard work, if it turns out to be something that works for me I will definitely hit your Patreon.

Hi DJZero, thanks for your interest! I have a few people beta-testing it right now. FYI, there’s no midi feedback (light-wise) but I feel it’s pretty useful in any case. If you are a Reaper forum member, please see my thread in the MIDI / OSC subforum… and send me a private message through there. I can get you a zip file of important stuff. Thanks again!

PS – this doesn’t need MIDI OX or LoopMIDI at all… which is why I think it’s so useful and less of a pain in the ass!

    Hey Chris,
I have been following your mega-project for Maschine as a control surface. Much respect for the hours and brain power you have put into this.
I have a Maschine Mikro Mk3 and have been unable to load your templates. However, I have followed your step by step instructions to the letter and I think there is still something missing. What routing sends are required to from the Maschine track to the 8 Group tracks? At the moment I can record midi notes for each Group in Reaper but I don’t get any sound when Maschine is in Midi Mode.

Hi Fletch! Yes, you won’t be able to load the Mikro MK3 template. As you can see in the PDF guide (if you had the link for the controller guide), the only Maschines supported are Mikro MK2, MK2, Studio, MK3, and JAM. Notice it’s not Mikro MK3, just the regular MK3. According to the template layout, it’s not ideal… I can make one, though. I can make a specific one for you just using the Controller Editor. I just don’t know how well it will work, and you have to make sure that the Reaper Actions match the MIDI CC#s I customize for the Mikro MK3. I can do that sometime the next few days, as I’m off work.

I am not sure about the Maschine Reaper Track Template (or Project Template)… again if you have a Mikro MK3, your pad pages might not be mapped properly.

      If I had a Mikro MK3 handy, I’d test everything out, but I don’t…

Which files did you download? The complete templates, the portable Reaper install, etc? Again, since Mikro MK3 isn’t supported, you might have some issues… but I will make a custom template for you for the MK3… maybe that can help (including the proper pad pages– I think the Maschine Reaper template has to use the Pad Page that starts at C2.

Keep in touch, shoot me an email and I’ll get you a link to the Mikro MK3 Template once I make it. And Happy New Year!
