Underrated Films: Searching (2018)
Starring John Cho / Debra Messing.
The summary sounded damn good, when I was flipping through the channels, on the 4th day of my battle with severe stomach flu…. this trailer doesn’t even do the film any justice, even though the trailer is good. The film is really, really good. Loved it.
David Kim (John Cho) loses his wife to lymphoma, and becomes distant with their pianist daughter Margot, after her mother dies.
One night after a study group that Margot said would go “all night”, Margot tries to call David three times but he is fast asleep. The next morning, he calls back and assumes she is in school. School marks her as absent, and when Margot doesn’t respond to any texts, voice mails or facetime requests, David rightfully assumes the worst, and reports Margot as missing.
A search through her laptop (which she oddly left on the kitchen counter, the night she disappeared, also the same night she was at the study group)… doesn’t give David much to go on.. all her friends through social media weren’t friends with her in real life, as she was reclusive and depressed after her mother died.
Detective Vick (Debra Messing) finds a lot of clues leading to Margot’s disappearance… some of which are difficult to explain, logically.
Without giving anything away… I thought this movie was GREAT. Filled with suspense and surprises. Great acting from Cho and Messing, and tons of detective work, from all angles. The computer-screen-focused editing style was a refreshing change of pace in the genre. Loved the film through and through, and will definitely watch again.
