Some people might find this short film a bit preachy, but I think it’s well-done. And scary, too. Only about 3 minutes long. Watch it.
Why am I posting this? Well….
October is Anti-Bullying Month. The first Monday of October asks people to wear blue, to raise awareness. I’ll be wearing blue tomorrow.
I’ve been teaching music for 15 years. I was bullied a lot as a kid. I was bullied probably until my mid-20s (seriously). I never fit in, and I never will. I never drank alcohol or attended parties (nor was I invited). I stayed in my room a lot, taught myself how to do music and computer shit. I hung out with people sometimes, but… I was the opposite of popular, at least until I was 25.
Big shout-out to all the weirdos, outcasts, freaks, nerds, geeks. They say it gets better. Yeah, it does… it sometimes takes a lot of time, though.
I have a tiny bedroom “record label” that I name Ousted Records. I call it that because to be ousted means to be driven out or expelled from a position or place. That’s that the popular and gorgeous kids do, every day. They oust the shy, weird kids, by default. That’s what the jocks and preps did to me in school, at least until 10th grade. They ousted me, even though I was cool and nice to them. Ousted Records. I’ve been ousted my whole life, from the bandmates in my first proper band who didn’t understand my taste and personality and made fun of me for it almost every day…. (years later—- “we didn’t mean any harm, man…”) to many others in school, and out of school.
To the girls and boys who think their shit doesn’t stink and think they can walk on water… seriously? Stop being bitches and assholes.
It’s October 2018. Rudeness and meanness is out of style and has been for a long-ass time. Seriously.
Kindness and empathy are the new cool (they’ve always been cool, but get with the program!!).
And to those who have the ability to look out for the bullied ones…. step up and intervene. Keep a watchful eye. Look out for the kids getting harassed and bullied. And step up. Make them feel important (because they are the most important).
Here’s a cover song I did of Buck 65’s “Cries A Girl”. Pay close attention to the lyrics and the story.
