When I first heard about this film, I thought it would be lame. Boy, was I wrong. It is one of my favorite music-related movies. Introduced by my ex-girlfriend Megan, who convinced me to give it a chance, Rock Star is the story of a singer of a tribute band, who actually becomes the singer of the band he’s paying tribute to (fictional 80s metal band Steel Dragon), after things don’t work out with their original singer. Inspired by a true story, as I believe this is what happened with Judas Priest, after Rob Halford left… but I’m not fully certain if this is true. No matter what, Rock Star is a superbly written and extremely entertaining film.

Mark Wahlberg just slays as Chris Cole, aka “Izzy”. He is completely believable as a metal band lead singer, but also a passionate, driven guy with a huge heart that stays with him throughout the entire film. The ending is great, too…. it’s heartfelt, but funny as well (especially during the credits, which pay homage to Wahlberg in a hilarious reference). Jennifer Aniston plays Emily, his longtime girlfriend in the film, who struggles to adjust to Izzy’s new life as a decadent rock star, and she is basically the only anchor in Izzy’s life.

The trailer makes it look like the movie is all about sex, drugs and rock n’ roll, and while it does contain a lot of that, there’s a lot more heart and soul to the movie than is shown in the trailer. Entertaining from start to finish, and an ending that always makes me get a little choked up, too.

This film is definitely worth your time. Don’t sleep on it!!

Spread the love!
