This film is utterly brilliant and superbly-acted. I think this was Will Smith’s first major acting role (in a feature-length film, not the Fresh Prince sitcom, which is classic).
Based on a true story, Will Smith plays “Paul”, a poor con-artist who encounters a rich couple (the “Kittredges”) one night, and leads them to quickly believe that he is a friend of their Ivy-league children, and also the son of legendary actor Sidney Poitier. At first they are skeptical, but eventually believe every word Paul says. He is quite convincing as a member of the bourgeoisie of Manhattan, but it may be revealed that he is anything but.
The trailer doesn’t quite show how brilliant this movie is… but it is worth your time. It’s probably in the top 20 films of the 1990s. Yes, it’s that good. Don’t sleep on it.
