When people think of the term “black/dark comedy”, I can think of no better film than Election. Acting is on-point (and over-the-top, as is the story). Matthew Broderick is just brilliant. The film is ridiculous and pokes fun at everything and everyone: goody-two-shoes people, dumb jocks, outsiders, teachers with dirty secrets, and high school politics. It pokes fun at all of that in the most intelligent and captivating way.
Although it’s mostly about the overachieving Tracy Flick (Reese Witherspoon), she’s not in the film much, as it’s more about Broderick’s character “Mr. M” and his utter stupidity.. and the stupidity/ignorance of Chris Klein’s “Paul Metzler”, and his sister Tammy Metzler, who in my opinion, steals every scene.
In places, the film is quite sexual and perverted, but it all ties into the story, even in a weird way. The fantasy/imagined parts and the editing therein is also really well-done.
An often-forgotten film, Election shouldn’t be. If you like creative, funny movies that don’t dumb down the viewer, don’t sleep on this brilliant satire.
