poster-thirteen

Brief summary: I’ll bullet-list this one—

  • Written by at-the-time, 17-year old (and co-star) Nikki Reed
  • Got made because Nikki Reed’s father was dating Catherine Hardwicke (director)… probably wouldn’t have been made, if they weren’t dating
  • The true arrival of Evan Rachel Wood, who’s gone on to do even better films, such as King of California, Across the Universe, and A Case Of You (even though she’s been in films since she was little)… her acting in this film is PHENOMENAL.
  • One of the few movies that address teen “cutting”, in a realistic, and empathetic way
  • Holly Hunter. I mean, shit. Put her in anything and the film reaches stellar heights of critical acclaim (I’m being totally serious, she is awesome).
  • Killer soundtrack
  • A frightening portrait of modern-day middle-school and high-schoolers…. yes, things can be this intense at that age (in 2003, and currently in 2014).
  • Insanely recommended. It’s one of those films you must OWN. Not just “watch.” I bought the DVD for like $19.99 at Target right after seeing it in 2003. Got the movie poster, too around the same time.

NOTE – the audio sync is out in this trailer. Try to watch, anyway. It’s awesome.
