Brief summary:  This oscar-winning film from 1980 tells the story of Loretta Lynn, legendary country singer/songwriter. I saw it again for only the second time a few days ago, and forgot how fucking GREAT it is. The first time I saw this, I think I was 10 or some shit. My mom and sister liked it and I believe I watched it with them almost 30 years ago. PERFECT movie.

Worth mentioning: Sissy Spacek (best-known for “Carrie”, 1976– a movie I will add to this blog soon) played and sang EVERY single song in the movie… no fake guitar playing, no fake singing…. everything was sung by her, and Beverly D’Angelo (who played Patsy Cline in the film) also sang all of her songs. Completely understandable that Spacek won the Oscar for Best Actress. Not only is her acting absolutely phenomenal in this, but the music performances alone are just flawless (even the scenes where she’s sitting there casually singing and playing in the garden).

Hate that “twangy” old, country music? You won’t after seeing this movie. I hated (read: despised) country when I was a little kid because my parents listened to a lot of it (the bad, overproduced mid-80s stuff), but I always liked the songs from this movie. When I started working in a record store in 2000, I got more into the classic stuff (Cash, Hank Williams Sr., Patsy Cline, Waylon Jennings, Conway Twitty, Ray Price, etc)…. and I bought Loretta Lynn’s “Van Lear Rose” when it came out in 2003 (produced by Jack White of the White Stripes), which was a REALLY great album, but I still wasn’t open-minded enough to listen to classic country on a regular basis. Now, I can’t live without it. I’ve seen Coal Miner’s Daughter four additional times over the last few days, and man…. it’s just a perfect story with FANTASTIC music. Definitely don’t pass this up.
